Cataloging Moving Image Materials

Publication, Distribution, Etc. (MARC field 260)

4B. [7.4] This area is used to record all information about the country, company name, and date for the distributing, releasing, issuing, and broadcasting of moving image materials. If the item being cataloged was released, distributed, or broadcast, follow the AMIM cataloging rules for this area. Those rules are not completely covered in these guidelines, which are intended to cover primarily archival and unreleased material. (For material that was not distributed, released etc., record information regarding place of creation, etc. in a 518 note (see 7B10/7B11) and give date in 260 field.)

4C. Place of distribution, release, broadcast, etc. (260 subfield a) [7.4C]

Because the city of origin, if known, may be significant for performing arts documentation, follow AMIMís optional practice: "Give the name of the city, rather than the country."

4C2. For performing arts documentation and other similar material recorded with no intent to distribute, do not give a country of distribution or the abbreviation [s.l.]. Give a date only, as instructed below in 4F4 [7.4C2] and provide information about place or location of filming in a 518 field (see 7B10/7B11).

4D. Name of distributor, releaser, broadcaster, etc. (260 subfield b) [7.4D]

4D3. For performing arts documentation and other similar material recorded with no intent to distribute, do not attempt to name a distributor or give the abbreviation [s.n.]. Give a date only, as instructed below in 4F4 [7.4D2]

4F. Date of distribution, release, broadcast, etc. (260 subfield c) [7.4F]

4F4. For noncommercial footage, home movies, outtakes, unedited footage, (unreleased performing arts documentation footage), etc., give the year the footage was shot (the year of creation/production). [7.4F3] If the year is unknown, give an approximate year (for guidelines for recording probable and uncertain dates, see Appendix). In most instances, a general note (500 field , see 7B1-3) or date/time and place of an event note (518 field, see 7B10/7B11) should be included that further explains the date.

For compilation items that do not have a year of creation, use the date span of works included, if known, or approximate date.
