Choreographing Your Search

Dance Collection, New York Public Library for the Performing Arts

HOW TO SEARCH, continued

Step 3: Viewing the full display of a record

Within the record, clicking on any highlighted word or phrase, such as the author, subject headings, or call numbers, will execute another search using that word or phrase.

Clicking on Return to browse at the top or bottom of the record will take you back to the listing you just clicked from.

Hints to remember when searching:

To find material on a specific choreographic work:
If you know the precise name of a choreographic work, use the SUBJECT index and enter the whole phrase; or,
Use the WORD index to enter distinctive words in the name of the work.
Do not use the TITLE index for choreographic works; use either the SUBJECT or WORD index.

Subjects, and sometimes even author's names, may appear in more than one form. If your search does not retrieve what you seek, try another approach. For authoritative terms, see "Searching the Authority File."

If searching by WORD (keyword), simple Boolean searching can be used, such as

dance or dancing -- retrieves a result with either word in the record;

greek and dancing -- retrieves a result with both words in the record

Each index screen provides more information about searching that index. Read the screen to get more options.

Sometimes computer lines are busy! If all ports are being used when you try to get into the catalog, you may not get connected right away, or you may get temporarily "bumped" off. Wait a few moments and try again.
